Cookie notice
We use no advertising cookies. Analytics runs only if you allow it.
Always on: needed for what you asked for
These are stored in your browser's local storage. They are used only on your device and never sent to us.
| Name | What it's for | How long |
|---|---|---|
aa:guess-daily, aa:guess-best, aa:guess-seen | Remembers that you've played today's Guess the Average, your best score, and which practice questions you've seen | Until you clear it |
aa:spelling-*, aa:general-knowledge-*, aa:maths-best | Your best quiz scores, and which questions you've seen so we don't repeat them | Until you clear it |
aa:convention | Whether you chose UK/Irish or American spelling | Until you clear it |
aa:assess | Your answers to "How average are you?", so your results work and you can carry on later. If you are 16 or over and haven't switched counting off, answers are added to anonymous counts, never linked together; also remembers if you chose "Don't count mine" | Until you choose "Forget my answers" or clear it |
aa:test | Set only if a link includes ?aa_test=1 (used by us when testing the live site): marks this browser as test traffic, so nothing it does is counted or sent to analytics | Until a link with ?aa_test=0 or you clear it |
aa:consent | Remembers your analytics choice so we don't ask on every page | 6 months, then we ask again |
On the contact page only, Cloudflare Turnstile may store a short-lived token in your browser to complete its robot check. It is needed to protect the form and is not used for tracking.
Only if you allow analytics
Nothing in this table is stored until you choose "Allow analytics". Choosing "No thanks" is as easy, and the site works exactly the same either way.
| Name | Provider | What it's for | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
aa:last-visit | AboutAverage | The date (not the time) of your last visit, so we can count returning visitors without giving you an identifier | Until your next visit; removed if you withdraw |
ph_*_posthog (session storage) | PostHog | Links the pages you view in one visit, so we can see which routes through the site work | Deleted when you close the tab |
Change your choice at any time with "Privacy choices" at the bottom of any page. See the privacy notice for exactly what is recorded.
Removing them
Clear this site's data in your browser settings to remove everything above. If we ever add advertising, we will ask for your consent first, and refusing will be as easy as accepting.
