Privacy notice

Short version: we don't ask who you are, what you type into a comparison stays in your browser, and we only count visits if you say yes.

Last updated 2026-10-25. AboutAverage is operated by Luteic Limited, a company registered in Ireland (registered number 779344, registered office 77 Camden Street Lower, Dublin 2, D02 XE80, Ireland). Luteic Limited ("we") is the controller of the personal data described here under the GDPR. To ask about your data, or to use any of your rights, use the contact form and choose "A privacy request", or write to us at our registered office.

What you type into comparisons and games

Your age, pay, hours, electricity use, guesses and quiz answers are processed by code running in your own browser. They are not sent to us or to anyone else, and they never appear in web addresses or analytics.

The "How average are you?" questions

Your answers are kept in your browser (local storage) so the results work and you can come back later. "Forget my answers" on the results screen deletes them. Analytics, if you allow it, records which questions were shown, whether they were answered or skipped, roughly how long each took (in bands such as "3 to 10 seconds"), and which theme you chose to explore next, never what you answered.

If you are under 18 and tell us how many months it has been since your birthday (optional, for the height comparison), that number is used only in your browser to read the growth chart. It is never sent to us or anyone else.

If you tell us you are 16 or over, your answers are added to anonymous counts unless you choose "Don't count mine" (under the questions, at any time). For a number, such as hours of sleep or your height, we count the number itself, rounded (height to the nearest centimetre; very large numbers, like photos on your phone, to the nearest 10 or 100); for a choice, we count the option you picked. We add 1 to a counter for that answer overall, for your country, for your age group and, if you gave it, for your gender, per day. Answers from anyone who says they are under 16 are never sent. We do not store individual responses, a profile of you, or anything that links one of your answers to another.

To stop automated or repeated submissions, you complete a Cloudflare Turnstile check once, and we give your browser a random code that expires after six hours and is kept only in the page's memory (it is never written to your device). While it is valid we keep scrambled one-way markers so the same question isn't counted twice; they are deleted within two days. Your IP address is used briefly for rate limiting, in scrambled form that changes daily, and is not stored with the counts.

Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in producing light-hearted statistics about everyday life, balanced by the safeguards above: we never receive your name or contact details, we keep no response records, and you can switch counting off with one tap before or during the game. Switching it off, or "Forget my answers", stops anything further being sent. Answers already added to the counts cannot be removed, because they cannot be traced back to you. We publish figures from these counts only once at least 100 answers exist, never show groups of fewer than 10, and always label them as AboutAverage players, not a national average. The counts are stored with Neon in Frankfurt, Germany.

What your browser stores

The games save a few small entries in your browser so they remember today's round, your best scores and your spelling preference. They never leave your device. If you allow analytics, two more entries are added (see below). Details and how to remove them are in our cookie notice.

Analytics (only if you allow it)

When you first visit, we ask whether we may count your visit. If you choose "No thanks", or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, no analytics code is loaded and nothing is sent. If you choose "Allow analytics", we record:

Our legal basis is your consent. You can change your mind at any time using "Privacy choices" at the bottom of every page; withdrawing stops collection immediately. Analytics is provided by PostHog (servers in Frankfurt, Germany), acting as our processor. We keep analytics data for 12 months and then delete it. If you are under 16, please choose "No thanks".

If you use the contact form or email us

We use your name, email address and message only to reply and to fix anything you report. The contact form is protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that you are a person, not a robot. Turnstile runs only on the contact page and processes technical information about your browser and connection (including your IP address) for that check; Cloudflare's Turnstile privacy terms say it is not used for advertising. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering messages and keeping the form free of spam.

Messages are delivered to our inbox by Resend, an email service acting as our processor, which keeps a delivery record for about 30 days. We keep correspondence for as long as needed to deal with it and delete it within two years. We never add you to a mailing list.

To limit abuse, the form counts submissions from each connection using a scrambled code that changes every day; the code cannot be turned back into your IP address and is deleted within two days.

Hosting and server logs

The site is hosted by Vercel. Like any website host, Vercel receives technical information when your browser requests a page: your IP address, the page requested, the time and your browser type. This is used to deliver and secure the site (our legitimate interest) and kept only for the short period Vercel's logging allows. Our domain's DNS is run by Cloudflare.

International transfers

Vercel, Cloudflare and Resend are US-based companies. Where they process personal data outside the European Economic Area, they do so under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, as set out in their data processing agreements with us.

What we don't do

We don't sell or share personal data, we don't use advertising trackers, and we don't make automated decisions about you. If we ever add advertising, we will update this notice first and ask for your consent where the law requires it.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, to restrict or object to how we use it, or to receive a copy, by using the contact form or writing to our registered office. Where we rely on consent you can withdraw it at any time. You can also complain to the Data Protection Commission in Ireland (dataprotection.ie) or your local data protection authority.
